What’s the one thing that sets apart the overwhelmingly wealthy from the rest of the world–other than money, of course? They read–and they read a lot.

Business tycoon and famed investor Warren Buffett is said to devote at least 80% of each day to reading. In the early days of his investing career, he read between 600 to 1000 pages each day. Microsoft entrepreneur Bill Gates reads an estimated 50 books a year. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised to read a book every two weeks in 2015.

Why is high volume reading so popular among these giants of success? Well, the answer is simple. Knowledge comes from books–to gain more of it, you should read more. Much more.

Buffett once said, “That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it.” Surprisingly enough, we all have the capacity to grow immensely successful by changing our reading habits bit by bit, every day. The real question is not whether or not we have access to such change–but rather whether or not we will take advantage of the plethora of resources around us to put that change into effect.

That being said, however, we must be selective about the things we do read. Those who are successful often choose educational books and publications over novels and magazines, or other creative works. They also, interestingly enough, really enjoy reading biographies of the very successful people that came before them for inspiration and guidance.

In addition to the above, reading has been scientifically proven to aid in preventing stress, depression, and onset of dementia. It also manages to simultaneously enhance confidence, empathy, decision-making capabilities, and overall life satisfaction. With all these good things that come from just picking up a couple extra books in a week, reading no longer seems like such a tedious, time-sapping thing.

Follow in the footsteps of Gates, Buffett, Zuckerberg, and endless others, and seize the secret of the very wealthy. Read more. Your mind and wallet alike will more than likely thank you.
