No one knows and appreciates the virtues of a collaborative work environment more than Jason Saltzman, founder and CEO of New York City-based shared workspace Alley.

The key to making a true collaborative environment work? Open source technology, Saltzman says.

The perfect example of open source technology at work is Google’s Android, the mobile operating system that device makers such as Samsung build their devices on. Once a new version of Android is produced, it is released to the public so that developers and other companies can modify and create their own unique interpretations of it.
